Friday Faves

Well hey there, guys! Happy first Friday of fall! Even though it’s been near 90 and sunny in beautiful Denver the past two weeks, I can detect a hint of the cooler weather to come and it’s kind of making me giddy. I’ve got a closet full of booties and jeans and sweaters that are calling my name.

Before those chilly temps enter the building however, you better believe I’m going to be soaking up every last ounce of this Indian summer, starting with my double-header softball game tonight. Tomorrow, the shenanigans and fun continue with a cornhole tourney my friends and I are competing in. It’s being put on by one of our favorite bars and all the money raised goes directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation which is so very cool. I don’t wanna brag, but I’m kind of a big deal when it comes to the ‘hole. #Kobe

I’m rounding out my weekend on Sunday with an epic shopping trip with my seeeester. Our best friend is getting married in just two weeks up in Estes Park, CO and I am still without the perfect LBD. Of course I’m gonna need some new shoes to go along with that dress. And jewelry. And possible a spiffy new clutch. Obvies. I would just like to apologize in advance to my bank account for the damage I’m about to do.

Whatever you’ve got up your sleeve for this weekend, I hope you all have a blast and a half! But before you get started on the awesomeness, be sure to take a look at my finds from around the web and more in this week’s edition of Friday Faves. 🙂

Favorite face-plant: Chocolate Buttermilk-Frosted Brownies. Between work (leading three writing work shops, end of term madness AND training my work study students), getting pulled over for having a funky tail light (ugh), and just general adulting, it has been a WEEK! Nothing these epic brownies can’t fix though, right? This picture makes me stupid happy!

Favorite wow: I don’t know if y’all have heard, but this Sunday there is going to be a complete Lunar Eclipse aka The Blood Moon aka AWESOME! The last time this happened was in 1982 (pre-Wendi) and it’s not supposed to happen again until 2033. Be sure to get outside around dusk to check out this total WOW moment!

Favorite read: Why It Doesn’t Matter How You Feel About Your Friends. This was such a huge read for me this week. I think about my friends all the time. Like, daily. About how much I love them, how their jobs are going, how their families are doing, what their days are like – but unless I reach out and ask, it doesn’t matter much at all. Must read!

Favorite Blast From the Past: “Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger, can I take your order?!” Kenan and Kel had a bit of a reunion this week on Jimmy Fallon and it was glorious.

Favorite bite: Cinnamon-Sugar Sweet Potato Fries with Brown Butter Marshmallow Glaze. Ok why have I never thought to toss my Sweet Potato Fries with cinnamon-sugar, and why oh WHY have I never drizzled them with brown butter marshmallow glaze before?!

Favorite fantasy: Venice. Oh, this.

Favorite furball. This picture makes me all kinds of happy. What a sweetie! (And, uh, can I get in on some of that ice cream?)Tracey-Ayton-Photo-Frankie_mini

Favorite Jam: Recently discovered a band called Jamestown Story and my peeps, I CANNOT GET ENOUGH! Check them out ASAP! You can start by listening to this one. #AllTheFeels

Favorite photo. Ahhh, fall. 🙂 Do you have your pumpkins yet?  Hoping to pick some up at the Farmers’ Market next weekend.

Favorite treat: Ooey Gooey Caramel Pumpkin Blondies. Speaking of pumpkin…OMG! The ooo, the goo! 😉

Friday Faves :)

Well hello there all of you lovely people! And a very happy Friday!

It’s another rainy, gloomy day here in Seattle, I mean Denver. But for realsies though. *What is the deal with all this rain?!

*Said in Seinfeld’s voice

Don’t get me wrong. I love a good dreary day every once in a while. It’s the perfect weather to curl up with a good book (or five), a cup of hot chocolate, and some major Netflixage. But three weeks in a row?! Mother Nature, you know I love ya, but you’re kind of turning onto a Debbie Downer.

It may be cloudy outside, but I’m not going to let that rain on my TGIF parade. Pun intended. This weekend is shaping up to be a good one (but aren’t all weekends good by default?). I don’t have a whole lot planned; dinner tonight with a good friend, some retail therapy on Saturday, and and then maybe a hike on Sunday (if Debbie Downer decides to cooperate with me). I’m also looking forward to relaxing a bit since the next few weekends are going to be strawberry-jam packed (Memorial Day weekend, Barenaked Ladies concert, my sister’s birthday, my friend from college is visiting and the Brewers/Rockies series). Just so much to look forward to, I can barely stand it!

Whatever you guys have planned for the weekend, I hope you all have the bestest time! But before you start sipping on those 5 o’clock happy hour cocktails, be sure to check out my finds from around the web and more in this week’s edition of Friday Faves!

And have a Bellini for me, will you?

Favorite reminder. Ugh, most amazing thing I’ve read in a long time.

Favorite sweet: Cookie Butter Cookie Dough. Make edible raw cookie dough with Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter, or Biscoff Spread, then stud it with white chocolate chips. YES PLEASE! (Locals: FYI Trader Joe’s just got a new shipment of cookie butter in! Not that I was impatiently waiting or anything.)

Favorite funny: Grandparent’s Wedding Toast. You have to watch this video of grandparents who have been married for 72 years give wedding advice to their grandson, who’s about to tie the knot. HIGH-larious!

Favorite picture. Pure happiness! I need this as a poster, or something. 🙂

Favorite devour: Red Velvet Brownies. Red, chocolate, chewy lusciousness. OMG.

Favorite place: Lighthouse Cove Cottage. I’m kind of obsessed with lake houses right now. How fun would it be to have an adorable, summer retreat like this?

Favorite inspiration. Every other day I threaten myself with chopping my hair short again. This picture keeps me going for the gold though!

Favorite squeal. Hot sand! Hot sand! Hot sand!

Favorite funny: Jimmy Fallon, you never cease to make me laugh so hard I pee a little. TMI? Maybe, but just check out this hilarious video of him and Rebel Wilson playing an intense Whisper Challenge. “Feel my balls?”

Favorite furballs. Best buddies! Look at the eyeballs of the pup on the bottom – BAHAHA!

Friday Faves

Hola mi amigos!

Happy FriYAY! And May Day!

This week has made like Harry on a broomstick and just flown by! Actually, all of April has. How is it already May? Crazy hot sauce.

I’ve some pretty exciting plans on the docket for this weekend, starting with tonight. I’m living out my Who’s Line Is It Anyway dreams and going to see some live improve comedy with a friend which will be really fun! Nothing like a little ab-inducing laugh attack to kick off the weekend (my favorite form of cardio bee-tee-dubs).

Then on Saturday, the sis and I are channeling our inner Cal Ripken Jr. and hitting up the batting cages/throwing the ball around. We’ve decided to join an intramural coed softball league this summer (which actually starts in two weeks!! Like I said, just flying by!) and thought it might be best to get some practice time in. I used to play–and not to toot my own horn or anything, but I was pretty damn good–but that was eons ago; to say that I’m a tad rusty would be an understatement. I’m a lot. I’m pretty much the tinman of rusty. But I’m so super excited to get back into the swing of things, pun intended.

Other than that, I’m looking forward to kicking back with a good book, my queue of Netflix and getting my chillax on. Because that’s really what weekends are all about, aren’t they? Well, that and pizza. One must consume an ungodly amount of ‘zza. Hey, I didn’t make the rules, I just follow them.

Whatever it is you’ve got planned, I hope that you have an amazing weekend! But before you dive head first into that pepperoni, be sure to check out my favorites from around the web and more in the week’s Friday Faves!

Favorite Funny: I am still LOL’ing so hard at Kristen Wiig’s Daenerys impression on Jimmy Fallon. She KILLED it! I don’t know who I’m crushing harder on, my girl Kristen or Mr. Fallon.

Favorite place: Elan Valley, Wales. Which is the sky and which is the water?

Favorite GETINMYMOUTH: $!utty Brownies (respelled for spam purposes). I MEAN!!

Slutty Brownies

Favorite Reunion: Boy Meets World is still my favorite of show in the history of ever (well, besides Seinfeld of course) so you can imagine how excited I got when I saw this mini-reunion photo taken on the set of Girl Meets World that Ben Savage aka Corey Matthews posted on his insta the other day. My inner 13 year-old self was flipping out! Okay, okay. My outer 28-year self was flipping out!

Favorite Read: Run, don’t walk, to pick up a copy of Before I Go, by Colleen Oakley. I am about two-thirds of the way done with it right now and holy buckets…of emotions that is. Such a beautiful story of love, life and living every last moment like it truly is your last. But you’re gonna want to buy stock in some Kleenex.

Favorite flashback: Cinnamon Pull Apart Bread. My Mom used to make me Cinnamon Sugar Toast all the time when I was growing up. This updated twist is making my mouth water!

Favorite idea: Light Switch Time Capsule. Leave a note hidden behind a light switch when you move for another owner to find sometime in the future. Super clever.

Favorite Pick-up line(s):Are you a horcrux? Because I think you just stole a little piece of my heart.” I can’t with these right now, especially 8, 12 and 15!

Favorite view. Ohhhh, I hope I have a chance to do this someday!!!

Favorite personalized gift: Thumbprint Heart Pendant. Perfect for husband/wife, mom/dad/children, grandparents/grandchildren. I think this would be such a neat gift to give my momma this Mother’s Day!

*Mom, if you’re reading this, start preparing your surprised face now! 😉

Favorite print: Holstee Manifesto. Must. Have. ASAP. Love, love, love, this – I want it front and center somewhere in my house!

So…Are You Seeing Anyone?

Imagine this.

You’re at a family member’s house. They’re throwing some kind of party celebrating some birthday/holiday/anniversary/wedding, and because you don’t want to look completely anti-social, sitting alone in a corner talking to yourself about bills that are due and clothes that need to be washed, you attempt to make small talk. You approach your aunt or second cousin once removed, and after brief introductory conversation, the first thing that comes out of one of their mouths is,

“So…are you seeing anyone?”

It’s the one question that everyone may not want to ask per say, but it’s the one question that they seem to always want the answer to.

I hate this question. Like, enough-to-spit-out-a-quick-answer-or-circle-around-it-altogether-moving-onto-the-next-forced-question-which-is-most-likely-something-like- “Hasn’t this weather been crazy?”-or-“How about those Brewers?”-hate.

Here’s what I’d like to say:

Actually, I’m very happy being single at the moment. I recently started a new job and am living in a new city; it’s been a blast just being able to meet people and make new friends. I’m not on the hunt for a boyfriend right now, but if a guy with the personality of Jimmy Fallon and the looks of Chris Hemsworth walks into my life (or bookstore—there’s nothing more sexy than a guy who reads, am I right, ladies?), I am totally open to seeing where things go.

Here’s what I actually end up saying:

Um…uh..well…the thing is…

Smooth, Wendi. Real smooth.

I hate this question because one, I don’t really have a one-word answer. And two, since when has my singledom, or anyone else’s for that matter, defined who I am? Who anyone is?

I’m turning the big 2-7 in a few weeks and realize that I am at the age now where a lot most of my friends from grade school, high school and college are getting married or popping out little kiddos. And honestly, I couldn’t be happier for them. I actually cannot wait till I get to that point in my life when I find the man of my dreams, settle down, and start a family. The truth is, I’m just not there yet. My parents got married when they were 24; they had me when they were 25 and my mom was only two years older than I am now when she had my sister.

Oh boy. According to those calculations, I am WAY behind “schedule”.

I do want a family, and I do want kids.

Eventually (so you can quit asking about great-grandbabies and grandbabies mom and grandma).

But for right now, I think it’s okay to be a bit selfish.

To focus on me.

To discover my passions and talents and goals and dreams outside of anybody else.

After all, I want to make sure that when I do enter a relationship, I am the best possible version of myself that I can be.

So…am I seeing anyone?

And let me tell you, she is pretty frogging amazing!

Question of the day: Have you ever been asked this question?

What is your response?

Me and Jenny Were Like Peas and Carrots

Couples. In pop-culture, in nature, and in life, there have been many famous and favorite pairs that have surpassed the hands of time, making the ‘favorite lists’ of both young and old.

Yesterday as I was walking through the mall, doing some early Christmas shopping, a lot of window browsing, and a little people watching, the idea of couples and pairs popped into my head. It could have been because everywhere I looked, everything and everyone I saw seemed to be surrounded by  another half, an equal and balancing counterpart. Some things just belong together:  the man dressed to the nines in a high-power business suit talking stocks and trades (or whatever high-power business suit wearing men talk about) in his bluetooth WHILE writing an email on his Blackberry (side note-not the best thing to do while crossing a busy downtown street if you don’t want to become a hood ornament), the mother of four kids chasing after her little rugrats, diaper bag the size of Texas in one hand, decked-out stroller in the other, and an oh so cute elderly couple walking hand-in-hand while casually strolling through the stores, still very much in love after all of their years together.

Yep. Some things just go together like, well, peanut butter and jelly, a Nicholas Sparks book and a box of tissues, a brisk December day and a nice cup of hot cocoa.

This whole idea of couples and pairs got me to think: what are some of my favorite couplings of all time? Are there any pairings that don’t go together so well? Is two really better than one? Below is a list of some of my favorite pairs of all time as well as those which I think are better off alone than together. I also thought it would fun to include those couples and/or pairs that may not be so common but that I find to be pretty darn amazing (and which I double-dog dare you to give a try).

My favorite pairs of all time:

Milk and cookies

The Milwaukee Brewers and I (We’re kind of a package deal)

Late night and Jimmy Fallon

Charlie Brown and Snoopy

Long runs and some good tunes (I’m a fan of anything old-school 80’s rock related but feel free to personalize your playlist as you wish)

Rainy days (Sunny days. Or  windy days. Or snowy days. Or, well, basically any kind of day and a good book)

Movies and popcorn

Love and the get-weak-in-the-knees-homerun-butterflies-in-your-stomach feeling

Christmas and the magical giving spirit

Ben & Jerry

Photographs and irreplaceable/long-lasting memories

Jeans and a t-shirt

Best friends and belly laughs

Green and Gold

Family/friends and bear hugs

Camping and s’mores/puggie pies

Prayer and possibility

Pairs that are better off single:

The Cubbs and/or Cardinals and I (also excepted here: any team OTHER than the Brewers and I, but especially the aforementioned teams)

Donald Trump and a good hairpiece–Talk about fly-aways 😉

Pizza and ranch dressing (blek!)

Late nights and early mornings

Dogs and sweaters (or booties, jackets, hats and/or any other piece of clothing you’d pull out of your own closet)

Meat and loaf (I mean, really…who was the wacky person who thought that packing meat into a loaf-shaped apparatus and then baking it, slathering it in ketchup and then eating it cold by the light of the refrigerator light at midnight  was a genius idea? In my opinion, the only thing that should be in loaf-form is bread. And the only thing that should be eaten cold by the light of the refrigerator light at midnight is ANYTHING but meatloaf. Sorry mom.)

Socks and sandals

Justin Bieber and multi-platinum records. Awards.CD’s. A nail polish line?

Out-of-the-shoe-box pairs I swear by (that you have to try!)

High tops and knee socks

Paperclips and jewelry

Peanut butter and pickle sandwiches

Scrambled eggs and maple syrup (I know what you’re thinking but it is soooooo good!)

Ice cream and saltine crackers (a staple my great-grandpa swore by…the epitamy of salty and sweet!)

I guess in some cases, two is really better than one. And one ‘two’ that is most definitely better than one…cookie dough and ice cream. Speaking of which, I better get going because I have a pint of the scrumptious stuff sitting on the counter and it’s calling my name  🙂

I hope you have a great rest of your first day of December!

Question of the day: What are some of your favorite pairs?

Friday Notes

1. It’s only 3 in the afternoon and already I have plowed my way through 6 Christmas albums. Although Michael Buble, Bing Crosby, Josh Groban, Kenny G and Adam Sandler have been on constant replay throughout my house this year, I would have to say my favorite go-to is Trans Siberian Orchestra. Their version of Carol of the Bells is amazing! Take a listen 🙂

2. Today I got a bag of Peanut M&M’s that had no brown ones. None. I couldn’t believe it. This wouldn’t have been good news for J.Lo because as she states in one of my all time favorite chick-flicks The Wedding Planner, “I only eat the brown ones because someone once said they have less artificial coloring because chocolate’s already brown.” I on the other hand was pretty darn excited; brown are my least favorite because they remind me of rabbit turds.

3. I have come to realize I love singing in the shower, but not acapella. Wouldn’t it sound ten times more awesome if I had some music accompaniment, say a guitar, some drums, a tambourine and possibly even a triangle every time I scrub-a-dub-dubbed? But no back-up singers. A girl has got to draw the line somewhere.

4. I know that your nose is supposed to smell and your feet do all the running, but lately it’s been the other way around for me. Although thanks to my Netty pot and Vick’s Vapor Rub, this nasty cold is on its way out.

5. He’s cute AND he’s hilariously hilarious. Jimmy Fallon, will you marry me?

6. Oh my stars, that Domino’s commercial has me salivating like everyone’s favorite St. Bernard Beethoven. Thanks to Pavlov, I know why.

7. Speaking of Pavlov, I miss Psychology. And Milwaukee.

8. But I am oh so glad to be near my family for the holidays. I seem to have the worst luck when it comes to traveling (i.e. once being snowed in at a motel for two days, another time being grounded for three due to fog and of course the time the airline lost ALL of my luggage…ugh). It’ll be nice not to have to worry about that craziness this year.

9. Speaking of the holidays, I think I need a new party dress. I’m thinking something sparkly, something colorful and of course something with lots of twirl. It’s got to twirl.

10. I also think I need a new pair of footy pajamas kind of like these here:

How cute are these?!

11. I am sooooo glad it’s Friday!

Have a GREAT Friday everybody!
