Friday Faves

Helllooooooo! La la la.

Friday, Friday, Friday – we made it! Is anyone else looking at their calendar just absolutely horrified that October is well underway, and dunh, dunh, dunhhhhh, the holidays are quickly approaching? I mean, don’t get me wrong. I LOVE the holiday season, but I feel like I haven’t had time to fully enjoy the pumpkin spiceness of fall yet. Which is exactly what I plan on doing this weekend. Some end-of-the-season softball, a beautiful autumn hike with friends, football (duh) and maybe a little (or a lot) of some HQ baking action are the makes of a couple of fantabulous days, my friends.

Whatever your plans are for the weekend, I hope you have a wonderful time, but before you get started in on all of the fun, be sure to check out my finds from around the web and more in this week’s edition of Friday Faves!

Favorite travel: 50 Trips to Take in the United States. This is a great list, and I was happy to see I’ve been to a bunch of the places in it. I still have high hopes and dreams of getting my booty overseas soonly, but this is a good reminder that we don’t always have to travel far to get a wonderful experience!

Favorite find: 3/4-Sleeve Color Block Sweater. This is one of the sweaters I recently got at Old Navy. The detail down the center + color blocked sleeves is super cute plus it’s just. so. comfy (and 50% off right now – dangit!) A must for me and my life motto: life is short – wear comfortable clothes!

Favorite bite: Melt-in-Your-Mouth Pumpkin Cookies. I attempted to make Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies last year for Thanksgiving and, while I thought they were okay bordering on good, my family took one bite and said they had the texture of cotton balls. Thanks, guys!! Think I’ll stick with this recipe instead. 😉

Favorite song: No, YOU’RE ugly crying! Jamie Lawson is incredibly talented and just signed with my forever fave Ed Sheeran’s label. Just try not to use all the tissues while listening to this song. I double-dog dare you.

Favorite photo. Wherever this is, I want to go to there.

Favorite funny: Bat Dad (click then scroll down for videos.) Oh my gosh, these videos of a Dad who disciplines his kids while wearing a batman mask are HYSTERICAL. I dare you not to laugh.

Favorite festive: Balloon Dipped Mason Jars. I adore this super simple idea for turning plain old mason jars into “candy corn”. Perfect festive decor for a Halloween party!

Favorite pooch. Can you handle the cuteness?

Favorite indulge: Skillet Brownies. DYING! Love the fact that this recipe can be made from start to finish in a cast iron skillet. Totally trying this sooner rather than later.

Friday Faves

Well hey there, guys! Happy first Friday of fall! Even though it’s been near 90 and sunny in beautiful Denver the past two weeks, I can detect a hint of the cooler weather to come and it’s kind of making me giddy. I’ve got a closet full of booties and jeans and sweaters that are calling my name.

Before those chilly temps enter the building however, you better believe I’m going to be soaking up every last ounce of this Indian summer, starting with my double-header softball game tonight. Tomorrow, the shenanigans and fun continue with a cornhole tourney my friends and I are competing in. It’s being put on by one of our favorite bars and all the money raised goes directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation which is so very cool. I don’t wanna brag, but I’m kind of a big deal when it comes to the ‘hole. #Kobe

I’m rounding out my weekend on Sunday with an epic shopping trip with my seeeester. Our best friend is getting married in just two weeks up in Estes Park, CO and I am still without the perfect LBD. Of course I’m gonna need some new shoes to go along with that dress. And jewelry. And possible a spiffy new clutch. Obvies. I would just like to apologize in advance to my bank account for the damage I’m about to do.

Whatever you’ve got up your sleeve for this weekend, I hope you all have a blast and a half! But before you get started on the awesomeness, be sure to take a look at my finds from around the web and more in this week’s edition of Friday Faves. 🙂

Favorite face-plant: Chocolate Buttermilk-Frosted Brownies. Between work (leading three writing work shops, end of term madness AND training my work study students), getting pulled over for having a funky tail light (ugh), and just general adulting, it has been a WEEK! Nothing these epic brownies can’t fix though, right? This picture makes me stupid happy!

Favorite wow: I don’t know if y’all have heard, but this Sunday there is going to be a complete Lunar Eclipse aka The Blood Moon aka AWESOME! The last time this happened was in 1982 (pre-Wendi) and it’s not supposed to happen again until 2033. Be sure to get outside around dusk to check out this total WOW moment!

Favorite read: Why It Doesn’t Matter How You Feel About Your Friends. This was such a huge read for me this week. I think about my friends all the time. Like, daily. About how much I love them, how their jobs are going, how their families are doing, what their days are like – but unless I reach out and ask, it doesn’t matter much at all. Must read!

Favorite Blast From the Past: “Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger, can I take your order?!” Kenan and Kel had a bit of a reunion this week on Jimmy Fallon and it was glorious.

Favorite bite: Cinnamon-Sugar Sweet Potato Fries with Brown Butter Marshmallow Glaze. Ok why have I never thought to toss my Sweet Potato Fries with cinnamon-sugar, and why oh WHY have I never drizzled them with brown butter marshmallow glaze before?!

Fall is Undeniabley Better Than Summer…And Here’s Why

shutterstock_303889931

Yesterday when I woke up, there was frost on my car windows, y’all. Frost! In August!

And as weird as it sounds, I actually couldn’t have been more excited. After a long and very hot summer, I’ve been jonsin’ for cooler temps, fuzzy sweaters, and pumpkin spice anything and everything (I know. I’m one of those). Fall has definitely been and probably will always be my all-time favorite season. The changing of the leaves, the crispness of the air, and the reintroduction of sweatpants into my life makes me tres happy. Any excuse not to have to shave my legs is a great excuse in my book.

Here are some other reasons why fall is undeniably better than summer:

  1. So many crunchy leaves! It’s probably a little concerning how cathartic stepping on a perfectly crunchy leaf is. Like, Hey! Look at this beautiful piece of nature! LEMME GO OUT OF MY WAY TO STEP ON IT. Oh well. Can’t stop, won’t stop.
  2. The seasonal foods and beverages return. This isn’t some love letter to the pumpkin spice latte. However, so many other yummy treats are returning to your life in the best of ways. Like pumpkin bread. I’m a little bit in love with pumpkin bread.
  3. The month of October. There’s a reason everyone recommends traveling in October. The weather’s agreeable pretty much everywhere, and did I mention how pretty the Earth is for that miraculous month??? LOOK AT IT.
  4. Halloween! You don’t have to go trick-or-treating to love Halloween. It’s great. There’s candy. Costumes. Jack-O-Lanterns. And….
  5. Disney Channel movies!!! The ’13 Nights of Halloween’ special on Disney Channel is a special kind of miracle. Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown, Tower of Terror, Hocus Pocus… If I could summarize my childhood in one month of movies, this would be it.
  6. It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Yep. Everything about this.

wwxgkad7. Beach season is over! I’m a full supporter that every body is a “beach body” simply because it’s a body and it’s on the beach. However, it’s nice to move past those hot months with their side of body shaming to the chill months of sweaters and scarves.

8. SWEATER WEATHER. Literally everyone looks great in a sweater, and they’re so comfortable! Brb, taking a nap standing up because I’m just that cozy all the time in my sweater.

9. TV shows are finally returning! We’ve been waiting in agony for MONTHS to find out what’s happening on How To Get Away With Murder and with fall comes all the TV. I’VE MISSED YOU, SHONDA.

10. Corn mazes are surprisingly fun. It seems like the ultimate cliche of autumn, buuuuuut they’re fun. I’ll admit it. Especially when you get to end the maze fun with hot chocolate. And pumpkin bread.

11. ‘Fall’ as a verb is immensely better than ‘summer.’ I can’t be the only one that gets superiorly annoyed whenever someone mentions that they’re “summering” somewhere. It’s fine to say you’re going on a vacation, but summering? Really? Can you not please? Ten more points for Gryffindor fall.

Fall Fever

Mmm…you can smell it, you can see it, you can feel it in the air.

Fall is upon us my friends.

It's Fall y'all 🙂

Although the official start to my most favorite of seasons isn’t until next Friday, it feels like summer has said it’s goodbyes and just like Elvis, has left the building. Now don’t get me wrong, I love the three months out of the year where I can live in shorts, flip-flops and t-shirts, hanging poolside, going to endless baseball games and eating copious amounts of hot dogs and watermelon. There is just something about the introduction of the autumn season however that makes me smile and feel all warm and cozy inside, despite the fact that there is now a slight chill and crispness in the air.

Here are some of the reasons why I ‘Fall’ in love with the autumn season more and more every year…

1. Show me the Pumpkins!

Pumpkin Pie, Pumpkin candles, Pumpkin Spice Muffins, Pumpkin patches, Pumpkin bread, Pumpkin Lattes, Pumpkin carving. Call me Bubba Gump, or better yet, Bubba ‘Pump”, but I love me some pumpkins! Probably one of my all-time favorite gourds of all time, pumpkins are the pinnacle representation of the fall season. There is no better way to spend a sunny and cool autumn day than by hitting up a local pumpkin patch, going for a hay ride or taking a stroll (aka getting lost) through a corn maze and selecting your very own pumpkin to take home with you to enjoy.

2. Clothes call

One of my favorite parts of fall has got to be the closet swap out. After months of skin-bearing shorts, t-shirts, tanks and bikinis, it’s time to cover up with my favorite hoody, cozy sweater and comfy pair of jeans/sweats. The cooler temps outside are just right, not too cold yet to need heavy coats and jackets but just cool enough to pull out the sweatshirts and Levi’s.

3. Are you ready for some football?!

Bonified Cheesehead 🙂

Sadly, with fall comes the end of cheering on my Brewers to victory…at least until next March. Hakuna matata my friends because in place of the ‘Crew’ comes the ‘Pack’ and the Badgers. I love football season, not as much as baseball it’s true, but it’s still a touchdown of fun and excitement. I mean, what’s not to love about game-day parties, tail gating, yummy food, good friends, yummy food, intense-out-of-your-seat-with-anticipation games, yummy food, crazy fans, yummy food, Joel Madden commentary, tight pants, and did I mention yummy food? I have a feeling it’s going to be a great year WI football!

4. ‘Soup’er Suppers

Just like mamma used to make 🙂

Extra marshmallows please!

Warm and ooey and gooey and sooooo good!

As the temperatures drop, nothing warms me up better than filling my belly with warm, tasty and scrumdiddlyumptious comfort food. The warmer months are great for grilled burgers and brats, cool salads and sandwiches, ice cream (well, ice cream is good no matter what season we’re talking, let’s get that straight right away), fresh fruit and refreshing lemonade; they are bites that you tend to crave when it’s hot and sticky out that will satisfy your tummy and help keep you cool. As it gets chillier however, you, or at least I know I do, start to crave those warm and toasty kinds of foods again; grilled cheese, homemade soups and chili, ooey and gooey muffins and cookies, hot chocolate and apple pies and crisp, to name just a few. I look forward to this time of year when I can dust off my oven and stove and start cooking again. Well, attempt to cook at least. I am most definitely no Julia Child or Paula Dean but I am learning, one dish at a time.

5. A+ Aroma

I think M.C Hammer said it best…”You can’t smell this….candle time.” Fall is when I start to go bonkers for candles. I love filling my apartment with the smells and aromas of the autumn season. Plus, they’re just so purrty 🙂

6. Trick or Treat

Going old school on this one. That's me in the black get-up. Can you guess what I was?

Candy? Check. Costumes? Check. A night totally dedicated to feeling like a kid again? Check.

7. Cha-cha-cha-changes

Beautiful!

Simply stunning!

My absolute favorite thing about fall I would have to say would be the changing and falling of the leaves. I have been all over the country during this time of year and have been privy to many a changed leaf, but I still believe that Wisconsin has some of the most beautiful and picturesque falls around. It’s almost as if God took a paint brush and painted the gorgeous landscape himself, mixing together the most brilliant of oranges, reds, browns and golds.  It truly is breathtaking. Just when the leaves hit their peak color, they cascade off of the trees, sending them twirling and floating to the ground below. That is when the fun really begins. Most people think leaves are a pain in the bum, having to rake them or blow them off of their yards and walk ways. I tend to take a different approach. When I was a young girl (and to this day), I was the first one to volunteer to rake the yard. I loved gathering the leaves, working up a sweat to build and create the biggest and baddest leaf pile ever. Once it was complete, I took a running start and catapulted into leaf heaven. Sitting in my pile of mulch, surrounded by leaves of every color, shape and size, I would breath in the crisp smell, feel the cool and damp foliage against my arms and legs, and listen to the crunch and rustling of the pile as I moved around ever so slighty. It’s pretty darn awesome.

You see why a girl can’t help but ‘fall’ in love all over again?

Speaking of fall treats, the first muffins I made of the fall season have just finished baking up in the oven. Hate to up and run, but I am going to make like a tree, and leaf…I’ve got some serious eating to do 🙂

Top of the muffin to you 🙂

Have a great Sunday night guys!

Question of the day: What is your favorite part of fall?
