As I promised in my last post, here are my top 10 favorite Harry Potter moments (not including the last film…I didn’t want to give anything away for those of you who haven’t seen or read the final movie/book). Now this was one of the toughest lists I’ve ever had to compile. How do you possibly go through 10 years of amazing memories and pick only 10?
Some of you will completely disagree with the ones I chose, but that’s alright. I want you to pick some of your own favorites and add to the list!
10. Harry, Ron and Hermione meet for the first time on the Hogwarts Express–Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone
Their personalities are set in stone from the very start! This is one of the funniest scenes in the entire first film. Ron and Hermione immediately form a disliking for each other that obviously changes over the years. Who can forget Ron’s attempt at magic and Hermione cooly pointing out the fact that Ron has dirt on his face. The chemistry between these three future superstars was instant and we’ve loved them together ever since.
9. The Take Down of Professor Umbridge–Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
We were waiting for this scene from the beginning of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when awful Professor Umbridge walked through that door. Who can forget when she made poor Professor Trelawny leave?! I thought I had one or two bad teachers in the past but this women takes the cake. She was down right wretched! The Weasley twins give her exactly what’s coming to her. This is one of my favorite funny scenes which shows evil Umbridge, a woman who craves order, thrown into the utmost chaos. She doesn’t deal with it very well, does she? High five goes out to George and Fred!
8. Voldemort’s back!–Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
I think one of the scariest scenes in the Harry Potter series is this graveyard scene. Not only is it Harry’s first direct contact with the evil Lord Voldemort, it’s also the scene where we find out that everything will change for Harry. Voldemort goes through quite the ordeal to reinstate his humanly form – up until that point, he had to rely on other people to live (and how creepy was he?!) This scene marks a changing point for the wizarding world.
7. Harry’s First Quiditch Match–Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
It is one thing to picture the amazeballs game of Quidditch when reading the books for the first time, but actually seeing it played out on screen is another thing entirely; it is completely magical. Harry Potter’s natural talent on the Qudditch field is awesome to watch. Talk about a way to make yourself popular right away – win a quidditch match for your house. Makes me want to pick up a broom and head out on to the Quidditch pitch right now! Who’s with me?
6. Ron Loves Hermione!–Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Awww! I loved this moment! I (and you did too, don’t lie now) waited for this moment for so long! Finally Ron admits his feelings for Hermione, chasing away silly Lavender and her “won won” nonesense. The best line is when Hermione is trying to defend her relationship with Ron to his girlfriend Lavender. She doesn’t have any legs to stand on when she boldly announces that she’s his….friend. Great comeback Hermione! All ends well – we get rid of Lavender and Hermione finally knows how Ron feels about her. Sadly, Ron doesn’t remember anything when he fully awakes.
5. The Prophecy–Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Deep inside the Department of Mysteries in the Hall of Prophecies, Harry comes upon a crystal sphere with his name on it. As he touches it we hear, “The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches… For neither can live while the other survives.” Harry realizes that this prophecy is referring to Voldemort and himself. We all suspected it, but this moment confirms that Harry is the “Chosen One” and he is the only one who will be able to defeat Voldemort in the end. Epic moment. Epic.
4. Harry Makes His First Protronus–Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban
We first catch a glimpse of what Harry is capable of–Harry really lets it all go, unleashing his powers for the first time in this scene – and Harry doesn’t even know he’s actually doing it! At first, Harry thinks his father has returned from the grave to help him. He soon realizes that, through time travel, he is watching himself summon the powerful patronus that saves Sirius’ life. Go on with yo bad self Harry! “Expecto Patronum!!”
3. Sirius Black is Harry’s Godfather–Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban
Throughout ‘Prisoner of Azkaban’ we are made to believe that Sirius Black is a murderous lunatic and partly responsible for the death of James and Lily Potter. In the end, however, we discover that he was framed by Peter Pettigrew… and he is actually Harry’s godfather.Harry has grown without being able to turn to his parents for guidance, but finding out that Sirius is his godfather and also his father’s best friend fills the void. And how cool of a godfather was he, am I right?
2. Hermione’s Got one wicked upper-cut–Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban
Draco finally gets what’s coming to him from the determined girl he decides to mess with by calling a Mudblood. But Hermione is stronger than she looks and in this hilarious scene, makes sure Draco is put right back in his place. Draco cowers like a little baby and runs away when Hermione punches him square in the face. Amazing! It’s a great case of bullied against bully – and the right side wins! One of the best things to happen in the entire series, for surely. You go girlfriend! Although remember violence is NOT the answer kids! Well perhaps sometimes…
And my number one moment…so far…
1. This is where it all began–Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
There is no other scene that can possibly top Harry finding out he’s a wizard and having his life change forever. The big guy himself aka Hagrid visits Harry and his family while they are trying to escape the madness. Finally, Hagrid finds them and tells Harry he’s a wizard. Hagrid: “You’re a wizard, Harry.” Harry: “I’m a what?” It’s the start of something truly great. Eight films and 10 years later, Harry Potter is still inspiring kids and adults alike to once again believe in the power of magic!
Note: I have so so so so many other favorite moments in the Harry Potter series and like I said before, it was like pulling teeth trying to come up with just 10. The final film and book of course have some unforgettable moments that will be making the list…you will just have to go and see the movie or read the book to find out 😉
I hope you enjoyed my top 10 moments. Please feel free to add some of yours in the comments section. I would love to hear them!
